विदुर द्वापर युग में हस्तिनापुर के महामंत्री हुआ करते थे. विदुर एक बुद्धिमान एवं महान नीतिकार थे. इनके अनुभवों के द्वारा जो नीतियां बनायीं गई थी उनका द्वापर युग से लेकर आज तक प्रयोग किया जा रहा हैं. प्राचीन काल में प्रमुख रूप से आचार्य चाणक्य एक प्रमुख महान नीतिकार थे.
विदुर महाभारत काल में महाराज धृतराष्ट्र के महामंत्री थे. विदुर हमेशा सत्य, धर्म, अहिंसा का साथ देते थे. विदुर का जन्म एक दासी के यहाँ हुआ था जिसके कारण उनको हस्तिनापुर का राजा नहीं बनाया गया. पांडु के हस्तिनापुर का राजा बनने के बाद विदुर को हस्तिनापुर का महामंत्री बना दिया गया.

विदुर को पांडवों का हितैषी माना जाता है क्योंकि वे सदैव सत्य, धर्म, अहिंसा का साथ देते थे. विदुर ने हमेशा अपने बुद्धि कौशल से हस्तिनापुर को बड़ी से बड़ी मुसीबत से निकाला था. विदुर हमेशा महाराज धृतराष्ट्र को समझाया करते थे परन्तु महाराज धृतराष्ट्र पुत्रप्रेम के वशीभूत होकर दुर्योधन का पक्ष लेते थे. जो कि महाभारत युद्ध होने का प्रमुख कारण था.

विदुर जी ने कहा है कि प्रत्येक व्यक्ति को हमेशा धर्म की राह पर चलना चाहिये. धर्म की राह पर चलने से सदैव आपका भला ही होगा आपका जीवन सदैव सुख-शांति से भरा रहेगा. जो व्यक्ति धर्म की राह पर नहीं चलता उसे हमेशा कष्ट, दुःख, दरिद्रता घेरे रहती हैं .
क्षमा करके
विदुर जी ने कहा हैं प्रत्येक व्यक्ति अपने जीवन में कुछ न कुछ गलतियाँ करता रहता हैं. विदुर जी ने कहा हैं कि समझदार व्यक्ति वह है जो गलतियों को माफ़ करके अपनी गलतियों से सीख लेकर आगे बढे. क्षमादान सबसे बड़ा दान होता हैं. यदि कोई अन्य व्यक्ति भी गलती करे तो उसे भी माफ़ करने से आपसी रिश्ता खराब नही होता हैं और आपस में प्रेम व्यवहार बना रहता हैं
ज्ञान ही सर्वोच्च धन
विदुर जी कहते हैं कि किसी व्यक्ति का सबसे बड़ा धन उसका ज्ञान होता हैं. जो व्यक्ति लालच का त्याग करता हैं उसका जीवन हमेशा सुख शांति से भरा होता हैं. ज्ञानी व्यक्ति के जीवन में हमेशा प्रकाश होता हैं , वही अज्ञानी व्यक्ति का जीवन अंधकारमय होता हैं .
अहिंसा का मार्ग
विदुर जी कहते हैं कि प्रत्येक व्यक्ति को हमेशा सत्य, अहिंषा की राह पर चलना चाहिये. सत्य, अहिंषा की राह पर चलने से सदैव आपका भला ही होगा आपका जीवन सदैव सुख-शांति से भरा रहेगा. जो व्यक्ति सत्य, अहिंषा की राह पर नहीं चलता उसे हमेशा कष्ट, दुःख, दरिद्रता घेरे रहती हैं .
